In the past, Government Center was once known as Scollay Square. There were (still are) two subway stations there, they are now called the Blue Line and the Green Line. The Green Line is closer to the surface than the Blue Line. When this was Scollay Square, the stations were called Scollay Upper and Scollay Under, referring to which station was above the other. Scollay Square wasn't the best neighborhood in town, shall we say, and the city of Boston leveled the whole neighborhood and started over. The area is now one of the more modern sections of Boston and is called Government Center because of the government buildings that are now there.
A more complete history of the Scollay Square/Government Center station can be found on my friend Tyler's blog. A while ago he did a very detailed post on the history of this area, including vintage photographs. Check it out if you're interested, and of course keep following our blog as well!
