Today's photo of the week comes from last Saturday, when I went into Boston to see Amtrak's 40th anniversary display train. After that, I visited my younger brother, who lives in Boston. We got bored, and decided to ride the subway for no reason. We got on the Green Line at Haymarket, but there was a baseball game going on that day and the Green Line was packed, so we got off at Government Center and got on the Blue Line there. However, the Government Center Blue Line station has recently been extended, and as a result some of the T's past has been uncovered there:
In the past, Government Center was once known as Scollay Square. There were (still are) two subway stations there, they are now called the Blue Line and the Green Line. The Green Line is closer to the surface than the Blue Line. When this was Scollay Square, the stations were called Scollay Upper and Scollay Under, referring to which station was above the other. Scollay Square wasn't the best neighborhood in town, shall we say, and the city of Boston leveled the whole neighborhood and started over. The area is now one of the more modern sections of Boston and is called Government Center because of the government buildings that are now there.
