Like a burrowing animal living coming up for air, an Alewife-bound Red Line train bursts forth from the tunnel through Boston's Beacon Hill and squeals into Charles/MGH station. The elevated station sits between the tunnel to Park Street and the Longfellow Bridge over the Charles River, and the curves to the tunnel are so tight that girder rail is employed on the inside rail to keep trains from destroying the track with lateral force. The track structure also includes a guard rail, the two running rails, and the 600 volt DC third rail - just one more piece of subway engineering on one of the nation's most historic subway systems.
