Photo of the Week: 10/28/2011

Well, it's officially been a year since we've been doing this blog. A year ago, on October 28, 2010, James posted a product review of a Kato SD40-2, which started this blog. Back then, we didn't post regularly at all, and as a result we didn't get much readership. It was kind of an unwritten rule that we post on Mondays, and eventually we started to come up with something to write every Monday. I'll admit, I didn't like the idea of a blog at first, because I didn't like writing. In December, I started the Photo of the Week posts, and because we already had a Monday post, I decided to do it on Fridays.Eventually, traffic to our blog grew, and we started posting more regularly. When James started his job with BNSF, we decided Mondays would be strictly for modeling, Wednesdays would be for prototype information, and Fridays would be for the Photo of the Week. James later started Saturday Slanguage, but that has since been discontinued because not a lot of people were reading it and it was starting to be a little too much for James. To celebrate a year of Ogden Brothers Trains, I'll deviate a little from my normal photo post and share some statistics.
It might be hard to see the numbers, but this is a graph showing total viewers per month. It starts in May 2010 (It's labeled 2009, but it's actually 2010) but our blog didn't exist then. The first viewers appear in October 2010 (again, labeled 2009). We had a grand total of 17 viewers for October! Of course, we didn't exist long in October, but in November we got 61. By comparison, we passed 1,000 in July. We went up a little in August, which is still our best month. We went down a little in September, but still stayed over 1,000. So far for this month we have beaten September's numbers.

This graph shows us which posts are the most popular. Again, we can view it by all time, month, week, day, and now. This one is set to all time. James's product review on the Athearn Genesis SD70ACe takes the cake by a long shot, it is almost at 400 views. My trip report on the fall foliage excursion last year ranks second at 239. This one shot up recently, but has died down again, and I expect it to fall back a little in this list before next fall. Other popular posts include James's article on how couplers work and my product review of the Sergent Engineering couplers, James's article on the White Pass & Yukon Railroad, and a few others. This graph is not entirely accurate, because it only counts views on the page of the article itself. If you see an article on the home page and read it there, it does not count on this graph.

This graph shows us which websites bring in the most traffic. Google wins again, and if you look closely, four other Googles show up further down on the graph. Facebook comes in second, probably because of our posting links and our fan page there. (By the way, if you're not already a fan, clicking that link will bring you right to our page!) The railroad that runs the foliage excursion I rode last fall posted a link to my review of their train, so their website comes in third. Our own website comes in fourth. Underneath this graph, we can see what search terms people have used to find our website. At the top of the list is ogdenbrotherstrains.blogspot.com, telling us that people are searching for us specifically, which is nice! a little further down the list is ogden brothers trains. Other popular search terms are athearn sd70ace, sergent couplers, and laconia car company, none of which surprise me given the popularity of those articles.

Well, that's the tour of our blog's statistics! I hope you enjoyed looking at graphs and numbers and general nerdiness. I promise I'll post a real photo next week, and in the mean time keep coming back to our blog!
